Cashy bones

Here's a little tribute to Cash for you all to enjoy. Cash the devoted dog that he is, took some time out of his busy napping schedule to play with Grant in the snow.
Sadly, when it was time to warm up next to the fire, Cash was left out in the cold.

Crash: Part D'Oh

Mom was in an accident today, and luckliy she escaped without harm. The Envoy, on the other hand, was a different story. I'll let you know more details as I find them out, but from what I heard from eyewitnesses, she caught about 4-6 feet of air before rolling and ended up about 25 feet from the road. There was signicant damage to both the windsheild and back windows, as both were shattered out, probably from when she rolled. The steering column and dash were all smashed as well, I'm not sure how that happened though. She had a lot of cuts from all the broken glass and complained of neck pain so they took her to the hospital. There was damage to the roof as well, and the back passenger side door was dented. The eyewtinesses also said they were amazed she landed on her wheels. I guess she tried to pass someone on the road to Idaho Falls and lost control. As you can see, it was snowing pretty heavily and visibility was minimal. It was eerily similar to my accident, and happened to be one year and a day to the date when I 'd'oh'ed into a fence. We're just glad she's ok.

Your Christmas stories

With Christmas on the horizon I'm filled with nostalgia of the ghosts of Christmas pasts. I would love to hear your stories of your favorite Christmas memories. I'll start: Little can beat the excitement of receiving the Thriller cassette tape in my stocking and then getting a ghetto blaster from under the tree, but I do have a classic Christmas story I treasure. I'll never forget the family (what was their name?) that our ward gave Christmas to when I was probably the age shown on the previous post. This family had little, maybe nothing for their kids for Christmas. It seems like the Young Men and Women collected gifts for this little family and delivered them on Christmas Eve when they weren't home. Luckily in Idaho in the 1980s people didn't lock their front doors, making it easy to bring a tree and gifts right inside the home of this family, and leave it decorated and stuffed with presents. Although I didn't actually get to see this happen I think Mom or Dad were involved and I heard the description of it and can still picture it to this day as if I was there. I donated a little white cradle to the little girl of the family. I still remember looking at it wistfully, knowing I'd never play with it again (actually probably wondering why I hadn't ever really played with it at all...and then wishing I had been given sisters to play dolls/cradles with), but I also remember that distinct warm feeling I had, knowing this would make another little girl happy Christmas morning.

A little bit...

Rafe deftly demonstrates his finger counting abilities in this video. I think most of you are high speed interneters, so you shouldn't have a problem viewing it. Sorry, it's a little dark (the lighting, not the content).

Wit and Wisdom

Nature verses nurture? Where did the Shirley sense of humor originate? It's a safe guess it's in our genes. All we have to do is listen to Grandpa for a few minutes, Grandma too, for proof of that. Here are a few of Grandpa's Quips that Dad has recorded in the last week since his heart attack: When the nurse asked if he wanted his pajamas on: "I used to sleep naked, but not anymore." When the nurse said she was the only one caring for him tonight: "Did all the dummies go home?" "If you mind all your P's and Qs, too soon you'll have too many letters." When Mom said she'll see him in the morning: "I'll be here or die trying." When he awoke to see all his posterity staring at him: "What? Am I on the endangered species list?" When told it was good to see you: "At my age it's good to be seen anywhere." When trying to stand and finding himself a little shaky: "I've been drunk and been smarter than this." "Mama told me there would be days like these. She didn't say there'd be nights like these." And then later, "Mama told me there'd be nights like these but not so many." We can't overlook the sweet humor of our special Grandma: "Every little bit helps said the old woman as she peed into the sea." "My hair is such a mess. I look like something sent for that didn't come." But maybe it didn't start with Grandpa, that funny gene. Here's proof we can trace it back to his grandpa: "I eat my peas with honey, I've done so all my life It makes them taste quite funny But it keeps them on my knife."

Great color scheme, Brandon!

Wow! I logged on today and noticed Brandon decided to reminisce about all of our high school days by changing the blog to match our high school's colors. You see, Brandon was a BIG man on campus during his day. From what I hear, he was THE MAN who everyone either want to be or be with. I've heard stories of wild keggers thrown by Brandon out at the sand dunes, and since he was close friends with Officer Skinner, he knew no cops would come to break it up. Countless chicks flocked just to get a glimpse of Brandon as he would arrive to class each day. He had his choice of any girl he wanted, whether it was the cheer squad captain or his choice of the Bobcadettes. As the star of the football, basketball, and track teams, he rarely had to do any assignments, as the coaches either rounded up a tutor for him, or they would exempt him from doing it. If I could even come close to accomplishing all he did during his high school tenure, I would be able to sleep more soundly at night. Bravo, Brandon. You're still a legend at MHS.

Cash sacrifices himself to save Utah couple

In an act of heroism unseen in today's world, a selfless dog sacrificed himself to save a young couple last week near the Snake River in Archer, Idaho. The couple was enjoying a scenic view from the tracks, oblivious to the oncoming train headed in their direction. "We didn't even know a train was coming," said Ash Shirley, of Orem, UT, who was visiting the area with her husband, Jeff. Cash pushed the couple to safety, but was unable to get off the tracks before succombing to the tremendous force of the locomotive. "It was truly a tragic situation," said Jeff, who also noted, "I saved his life once, I guess he was returning the favor." Cash was once thought of as worthless by several members of the family, including Jeff and his father, Scott. "I guess you could say he redeemed himself," said Jeff, who was unable to finish the interview after being overcome with emotion. Luckily, the couple espcaped harm. As for Cash, his calling and election has now been made sure and he can spend the rest of days chasing deer, rolling in manure, and sleeping in the eternal courts on high.

Thanksgiving Pictures

Here are a few shots from the last couple weeks. Some are from our trip up to Idaho last weekend, others are from our Thanksgiving with the Melzer's, a scenic walk we went on, and putting up our (fake) tree. Call me a sellout, I never thought I'd put one of those up...
Ash at the train bridge... "Cash, that's not a train coming, stay on the tracks..." I really liked this picture... I'm trying to be as good at photography as Anna, Brandon will tell me to keep trying...
What you don't see is the pool of water I sat in...
It was a lot smaller group that what I'm used to. As usual, I ate them out of house and home... The tree is almost as big as our t.v.! There you have it! I had a great break, do I really have to go back to the grind?

At least we have our wives to grow old with...

This Thanksgiving season, it's great to have families that we can be around. And most of all, it's great to have wives we can grow old with...

Check that editing out!

Halloween: 2007

Here's the haunted house I created; note the Jazz flag and matching Jazz hearse. Eric and Becky, eat your heart out. My Egyptian mask is finished and when the time comes for me to be mummified, I will be laid to rest with it covering my face. I had to be an animal because we did an animal theme; one parent said to me, "I liked your costume better last year." More details from the house. Note the names on the gravestones. Here's a side view of the house. I spent WAY too much time on this, and someday people will respect my artistic ability (Brandon).

Blogskrieg: A Blitz of Blogs from the AZ Scoresby's

So here are few things that have been going on with us the last few weeks. Halloween Here are some pictures of the kids for Halloween. This year was a Star Wars theme with Conner as Luke Skywalker, Claire as princess Leia, Rafe as Darth Vader, and Holland as Yoda.

Jenna took the kids around the neighborhood while they waited for me to get home from work (got stuck in traffic, and while idling there on the freeway my knee started feeling weird and seized up on me. I couldn't extend my leg and it hurt really bad. I could barely get my toes on the accelerator and had to brake with my left leg. I don't know what it was, maybe a cramp or something, but I hope it doesn't happen again. It felt better once I got home and could get out of the car). Anyway, we just did the annual Trunk or Treat at the church. We were done by 6:30 pm and came home. The kids had fun greeting all the trick-or-treaters, which we actually had quite a few this year. (Notice Rafe's homemade Darth Vader vest complete with calculator duct-taped to his chest. Holland would not wear her Yoda ears, but finally got them on long enough to snap this picture.) Soccer Conner surprised us this year by telling us he wanted to play soccer. I thought he was never going to be interested in organized sports. But he has shown interest lately in soccer and football. So we signed him up for little league. His team didn't have a coach - that is until I volunteered. Yup, I'm a soccer dad. Have I ever coached anything in my life? No. Do I know anything about soccer? No. Do I need to? No. I was a little worried at first, but I've got good kids and the parents seem to be behaved as well, which is a good sign. Besides, I'm on my way to Coach of the Year, as the Miners ripped the Scorpions 5-1 in our opening game this last Saturday. Here's a picture of Conner after the game enjoying his after game snack.

Character Sketch Ever wonder how your children perceive you? Just have their school teacher give out a character sketch assignment, in which they have to describe someone they know. Well, Conner had just that assignment recently, and I only saw it after he had handed it in and received the grade. Apparently Jenna helped him type it, and as he was writing it, Conner told Jenna not to tell me. Jenna and I had quite the laugh about it, but still it made me realize how kids perceive you and what sort of example your setting. Later I asked Conner, "Is this how you really think I am?" And in his defense he said, "Well, that was before I knew you were going to be my soccer coach!" Now I'm really glad I took up the coaching job! Click the picture to read the original character sketch.

Colts v. Patriots

I am so excited for the big game this Sunday. Brandon, Grant and I all bought Colts jerseys and hats. Grant even has a little Colts football that he throws around the house. But what I really look forward to seeing a demonstration of the opposite personalities of Coach Dungy and Coach Belichick. One could say Coach Dungy is good and Coach Belichick is evil. Whatever happens, I'm sure that our good, honest Coach Dungy will handle it with dignity. Boy, I wish Jeff were here to enjoy the game with us.

Happy Halloween!

I want to see Halloween pictures of the Scoresby kids all dressed up and any other Shirleys that were dressed up (Jeff?). We didn't take Grant trick-or-treating but we brought him to a few of our friends' houses to show him off. Here in Indiana, they have specific trick-or-treating hours. I think it's a brilliant idea. Since we were taking Grant around, we ended up giving out candy to maybe three or four groups of kids. So, now we have a Costco size bag of candy tempting me. For more details about our Halloween festivities check out our blog.

No, this is almost done

Just wanted to give you an update on my Egyptian mask. I guess you could say it looks pretty good; I spent like 3 hours shading the Jazz logo. Tomorrow I'll add a gold bracelet.
