As I walked in the gym for our church basketball game yesterday, I looked at the other end of the court to check out our competitors, who happened to be from the Spanish branch. They had one guy who was about my height, and the rest looked like they were either still freshmen in high school or about 50 years old. Plus I was thinking, "These guys play soccer, not basketball, so we should have an easy game." Well, it was at first, when we climbed to a 15 point lead after the first quarter and then subbed all of our starters out. I watched in horror in the second quarter as they proceeded to go on a 16-0 run to start of the quarter, and just like that, our lead vanished. They were hitting from everywhere, mainly from the 3 point line. I could not believe how fast they were, they were quicker to the ball, they were outhustling us, and they played better as a team. In the fourth quarter, we still held a 2 point lead with about 1 minute left and I thought we were going to pull it out. This guy drove to the lane and I stuffed him about as bad as someone possibly could, but the ball bounced right out to this guy who hadn't made a single shot all game and he proceeded to drain about a 25 foot fadeaway 3 off one leg. So, that put them up 1 and we came down and this ball hog on our team jacked up a 3 and missed so we were forced to foul to get the ball back. They hadn't made any free throws the entire game but managed to hit a bunch of clutch free throws in the last minute, and we managed to make mistake after mistake. We still had a chance to win when we were down by 4 with 8 seconds left. My friend was fouled when he shot a 3, so he was awarded 3 free throws with 4 seconds left. I said to him, "Make the first 2, then miss the second and I'll try to get the rebound so we can tie it." The logic was good, however, he managed to miss all of them, and we ended up losing by 4. So I learned my lesson: NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE HEART OF A MEXICAN.

Face it Jeff. You're getting old. Those guys, whose jock straps you couldn't even carry weren't that good.
