March History Photo of the Month

A picture is worth a thousand words. So, I have decided to make our journals a bit more interesting by posting a Photo of the Month. Each month I will pick out a photo from the many pictures we have and post it on this blog. I am going to ask each of you to comment on the photo with as much or as little as you choose. Put down what ou think the date is, what was happening at the time, who is or who is not present in the photo, how old you were at the time, why the photo was taken, etc. I will collect the responses and keep them in the family journal. I will put them in the large plates, right next to the un-sealed portion.
The "Photo of the Month" for March is this family picture. I look forward to your participation and hope you will have fun with this. Add as many comments as you deem necessary. Grandchildren are also encouraged to submit questions or make commets. This is a great opportunity to learn more about each other. In-laws may also feel free to make comments. It would be great to know where they were at this time and what they were doing. I hope we get a feeling of family history as we realize the connections we have with each other. Enjoy.

You cannot tell from the picture, but I am wearing cowboy boots. Actually, they were more than just boots; they were these lace-up boots with a frilly thing on the front, which was the style at the time. Not surprisingly, even though that picture was taken some 16 years ago, it is the image that most Kinghorns still think of when I visit or when my name is mentioned.

Does anyone know why the picture was taken? We usually had pitures taken when there was going to be a change? What is the date of the picture? Brandon says 16 yers ago. Would that be 1993? Spring or fall?

Who is that hot chica, the one down in front, I mean? I was going to say this was circa 1992??? Sort of reminds me when I started dating Jenna. But if it is 1993, then I'm out of the picture both literally and figuratively :( (not that I would have been in a Shirley family picture anyway). But I would emerge less than a year later. :D

I loved going out the the Shirley's to play with Brett, Brandon, and Jason. Oh, and to see Jenna too. Jeff was too cool for school.

Brandon, those boots were called 'ropers' - how I know this, I don't know, but I do know that all the country dancers HAD to have them.

Also, I have to point out that if Anna were in the picture....she'd be Jenna. :)

This was around Memorial Day 1993. It was taken at Porter Park the summer before I started growing out my mullet. I remember Mom talking about how she 'wanted a family photo that was unique' and how I insisted we wear blue, which she finally relented.

More about what was going on at the time...I had just started shopping at Downeast outfitters, building up my supply of pants that would reach into the 20s (all of which Mom threw out the day I left from my mission, but that's a story for another day).

Ash just got off the floor laughing at how my haircut looks exactly the same at it does today...

This was also back when the only time I ever talked to Brett and Brandon was when I needed the 'two jigs' because I didn't have enough guys to play basketball, which usually ended up with one of them crying...which in turn ended up with Mom getting mad at me while Dad shook his head at me in disgust...

I would also torment Jason 'til there was no tomorrow' (along with Cassie), and enjoyed every second of it...

Nothing like the matching outfit family photo!

This is what I know for a fact. My size large denim shirt was bought as part of my 7th grade school shopping. I know for a fact, I'm wearing the only pair of Girboud jeans I ever owned. Those are my 8th grade pair of shoes. This means it's 1994.

We took the picture because, either Jenna was just leaving for Hawaii, or Jeff was just leaving on his mission.

All I remember was being mad that I had to wear a T-shirt when everyone else had nice shirts and I was mad that mine was dark blue. Sorry I can't add more than that
